Election Day still has me reading all over the internet. As a political junkie, I like nothing more than rehashing campaigns and as both presidential candidates ran very different campaigns there is plenty for me to digest. Eldest and Himself watched election night coverage with me, and some friends of Eldest also stopped by so we had lively conversations including a Facebook chat with Youngest – he was watching the coverage at 3 am in the morning in Austria very excited as it was his first opportunity to vote for President.
The rest of the week was spent raking leaves. Unfortunately I did not get everything up before the first snow but Himself braved cold and damp conditions to get some more leafs in bags yesterday. It has turned very cold and I have two books to finish for book group this week so I am way behind.
Here is what caught my interest this week:
With the cold weather and snow, a good mystery sounds like a book for me. Danielle from A Work in Progress introduces me to Agatha Christie’s favorite author, Elizabeth Daly and her sleuth Henry Gamadge. The Murders in Volume 2 is third of a series, but it looks like the first two have not yet been republished. Gamadge is a antiquarian bookseller in 1940’s New York City. And he has a cat named Martin – what isn’t there to like.
The Boston Bibliophile brings the first of twelve in Cara Black’s series featuring Aimée Leduc, a Parisian private investigator in Murder in the Marais. After her father’s death (he was a police detective), Aimée swears to stay away from criminal cases sticking to investigating technical crimes. But then she takes on a case of decoding for an elderly Jewish woman, which leads to a death…Aimée is a chameleon, smart and able to fit into many varied segments of society. A new series, set in France, with a female detective is the perfect thing to start the winter season.
If you prefer something on the lighter side, Farmlane Books recommends The 100 Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson stating:
The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared is the word-of-mouth bestseller of 2012. Positive reviews seem to be cropping up on a daily basis – so I thought I’d add another one to its arsenal…Overall this was an entertaining, original book and as long as you don’t take it too seriously I’m sure you’ll be charmed by it too.
Allan Karlsson has no interest in attending his 100th birthday party at the nursing home where he lives. He is very interested in maintaining his vodka levels where he wants them. In good health, he climbs out the window in his slippers and escapes. The novel details his travels (a suitcase of money, an elephant, and a murder as well as telling the reader of his extraordinary life involved in many of the seminal events of the 20th century.
Happy Reading.
